Selection of Old Agricultural Crops to Create Good Urban Environment

Abstract
To create good urban environment by using old agricultural crops eight crops were evaluated for growth and pollution injury at five districts in Seoul. In the investigation of ten air pollutants in July and August among the districts, the highest contents were detected at Kuroku and the lowest contents at Kwangzinku and Songpaku. The highest SO©ü was detected at Kuroku and the highest contents O©ý was detected at Songpaku in July and Seodaemunku in August. However, the yearly mean of environmental duty standard for SO©ü and O©ý in Korea has not been reached. The contents of dust particulate were the lowest at Kuroku in July and Yongsanku in August. During the three months of growth, Nicotiana tabacum was worst, whereas 5 crops such as Peridla frutescens, Ricinus communis, Zea mays, Sorghum bicolor, and Cassia tora were mostly in good condition. Yongsanku and Seodaemunku showed the worst growth and the best growth among five districts, respectively. For all that, Perilla frutescens, Sorghum bicolor, Loix ma-yuen showed good growth in all the districts. There were significant difference between the districts and the pollution injury. Therefore, pollution injury showed a severe injury of Gossypium ranking at Songpaku, Cassia tore at Kuroku, Nfcoriana tabacum at Kuroku and Songpaku, respectively. In the sulfur absorption in leaves, the highest contents were found at Yongsanku and the lowest contents at Seodaemunku and Songpaku. In the dust contents of leaves, the highest contents were found at Songpaku and the low contents at the most crops in alt the districts. The correlation coefficients between plant growth and pollution environments were highest in 03, followed by SO©ü and NOx. In most crops there were high correlation coefficients between pollution injury and O©ý, particularly in Perilla frutescens. Therefore, this study indicated that almost old agricultural crops are available for good urban environment in Seoul, regardless of pollution injury of plant growth to O©ý.
